The customer

In recent years, 1&1 Versatel, specialist for fiber gigabit connections and one of the leading telecommunications providers of data, Internet and voice services, is driving the nationwide expansion of the fiber network in Germany. During this process and, in particular, during infrastructural design, a lot of companies have been consulted and involved. Among them, STULZ participated as responsible of providing air conditioning solutions.

In Projekt Versatel, equipments, housed in 75m² and 111m² shelters, required a cooling capacity of around 30kW.

Despite of different lay-out of two types of shelters, customer was looking for a modular solution based on an efficient unit that permits to cool as well as to heat, with displacement or downflow air distribution, free cooling, and advanced detection and sensor systems.

The required features met a simple configuratio of 16kW model of TelAir3 range, without dedicated redesign. In fact, the flexibility that has always characterized STULZ units permitted to match the requests offering TNFA6HT4S2ZE408_45 model.

This model, with its variable compressor, freecooling, and emergency ventilation at 48VDC, permits to maximize not only instantaneous efficiency but also seasonal efficiency. In fact, the high freecooling capacity, due to air flow of 3,400 m³/h, allows energy savings of over 85% in a reference city like Hamburg, with a setpoint of 27°C.

Moreover, the unit is provided with 4.5kW stainless steel electrical heaters to maintain the temperature of IT equipment even in case of low external temperatures.

Reliability is guaranteed by a wide range of sensors: on return air, on supply air, on evaporator, on external temperature, on suction and discharge of the compressor, and a floor water sensor. Each sensor and each motor are controlled and managed by the electronic control board, proprietary of STULZ, that, with its flexibility fully met the project’s operational logic requirements.

Thanks to flexibility of its units, STULZ was able to simply configure without need of a redesign, a “custom-made” unit for the customer.

Over the past two years, more than 870 units has been delivered, more or less half of them with downflow air distribution for 111m² shelters equipped with raised floors, and the other half with displacement air distribution for 75m² shelters. Both configurations are 2N+1, controlled by an electronic controller that allows the management of multiple units in rotation/sequencing and partialization, maximizing system reliability and efficiency, respectively
